Adding a Gas Line

Remodeling is a super-hot trend right now, and plumbing is a big part of that. With additions to kitchens and even into backyards a daily request from our clients is to add gas lines to gas appliances. Whether you’re looking to change out your electric stove for gas or you want to add a gas BBQ to your backyard for entertaining by the pool there are some things you need to know first – everything you’re assuming is probably wrong.

Many homeowners think that they can just add gas lines to the closest gas appliance. Makes sense right? Unfortunately that isn’t how it works. Your current gas lines only hold .25 PSI of pressure. They are sized to meet the needs of the current gas appliance. Your gas line was sized by the length of the line as well as the BTU/CFH (British Thermal Unit/Cubic Feet Per Hour) needs of the appliance. Adding additional length to your current gas lines, unless your current gas line is oversized, will not allow enough natural gas to get to the new appliance. It will then pull natural gas from the existing gas appliance. This causes both appliances to not operate correctly as they don’t have enough fuel. A common request is to add a gas dryer next to the existing gas water heater. Just because the gas water heater is 5’ away doesn’t mean the existing line can handle the needs of the water and the gas dryer. Adding the extra BTU/CFH to the existing line will not allow either appliance to work. You  will just be left with cold showers and wet clothes.

Requirements for a Gas Line

If you’re looking to add natural gas appliances to your home a permit is required by the city to do the work. This can seem like a big hassle (and sometimes is) it is important to pull permits for your project. Permits assure that your project is done correctly and safely. Permits also ensure that the new plans are recorded with the city for the ability to resell your home. Adding gas lines is not something that should be on your DIY list. Doing your gas line wrong can be catastrophic. Not only be expensive to have redone again but it can blow up causing property damage and possibly bodily harm.
