Company Values Drive Company Culture

It can sound cliché when companies announce their values and tell you that you can trust them. I don’t know about you, but as soon as someone looks to me and says “Trust me,” I immediately start to doubt everything they’re saying. We all want to do business with companies we can trust to believe in doing the honorable thing; the old-fashioned golden rule.

I wish the golden rule wasn’t so old-fashioned — just like 80’s clothing coming back in style, I’d like to see “doing the right thing” come back in style. Things like business with a handshake, keeping your word, and doing the right thing when nobody’s watching. I’m sure we’d all love to see those things be part of a normal operation for every person and company we deal with. Unfortunately, that just isn’t the way the world is.

I believe that in order to change the world, you have to be the change you want to see, and that is why myself and the team at Robins Plumbing, Inc. lead with our values, rather than leading with profits. I’m always telling our team “If your value system is for sale, then your system has no value at all.”

The Value System At Robins Plumbing Means Everything To Us

Having our values on our wall is nice and all, and putting them on our website is great too, but how do we live and breathe our value system and make them part of who we really are, not something we say just to give lip service for a marketing campaign? At Robins Plumbing, we start with recognition of our team members for living our values. It can be easy for an employer or manager to point out the faults and missteps of their team, but what happens if you constantly focus on acknowledging them for doing the right thing? AMAZING things happen!

We have a point system within our organization that is allocated for demonstrating our company values while at work. This point system leads to bragging rights, recognition and prizes, even a grand price of a staycation package! I think it is so cool that we have a two-night staycation hotel package for doing the right thing, and I wish other plumbing companies would do something like that to recognize their employees. We even have trophies for the team members that most embody each value our company honors and lives by.

Our Mission Statement Is A Product Of Our Values

When we were designing our mission statement at Robins Plumbing, we didn’t go about it willy nilly. I asked myself “What can honoring our values give us and our clients?” Going through our 13 values and clearly defining what each one means to us, and what the result will be by always honoring them, made designing our company mission statement more of a calling than a mission.

We started Robins Plumbing back in 2004 because we had a vision to lead the plumbing profession and raise the bar on service by adding what seemed like common sense to us — TRUST. We love singing in the office to get tunes stuck in each other’s heads or playing fetch with the dogs in between phone calls. Our team loves to go on new adventures every month like learning how to paint or craft pottery, along with some golf and the occasional fancy champagne brunch in between.
