Learn About 6 Signs That Indicate You May Have A Slab Leak

A slab leak is a plumbing problem that occurs when a water line underneath the concrete slab of a building’s foundation develops a leak. These leaks can be challenging to detect and require specialized leak locating equipment to find. If left untreated, slab leaks can lead to severe damage to the building’s foundation and structure. Here are some signs to look out for that may indicate you have a slab leak.

     Increased Water Bills:

One of the most common signs of a slab leak is an unexplained increase in your water bill. If you notice your water bill has been increasing significantly without changes in your water usage, it may be a sign that you have a slab leak.

     Water Damage:

Another sign of a slab leak is water damage. Wet spots, dampness, or mold growth on your floors or walls are a sign. If you notice any signs of water damage, especially in areas near your foundation, it may indicate that you have a slab leak.

     Low Water Pressure:

If you notice that the water pressure in your home has decreased, it may be due to a slab leak. A slab leak can cause a decrease in water pressure. The decrease in water pressure is because the leaking water is not making it to the intended fixtures.

     Warm or Hot Spots:

Do you notice warm or hot spots on your floor? This may be an indication that you have a hot water slab leak. Hot water slab leaks are more common. It can lead to higher energy bills due to the need to constantly heat the water.

     Sounds of Running Water:

The sound of running water when no water is turned on, may indicate that you have a slab leak. The sound of running water may be faint or loud, depending on the size and location of the leak.

     Not enough Hot Water:

Running out of hot water is sometimes a sign that you have a slab leak on the hot side of your plumbing system.  Your water heater will work hard to ensure you have hot water. The constant demand on a unit that can never store hot water because the hot water is always running under the slab will ultimately lead to not enough hot water.

Slab leaks are a serious plumbing issue that requires immediate attention. If you notice any of the signs mentioned above, it’s important to contact a licensed plumber to diagnose and repair the problem. Ignoring a slab leak can lead to severe damage to your home’s foundation and structure, as well as mold growth and other health hazards. By being vigilant and acting quickly, you can protect your home and avoid costly repairs down the line.
