Time to Upgrade Your Water Heater? Here’s What You Need To Know Before Choosing the Right Water Heater for Your Home: Tank Style, Hybrid, or Tankless?

When it comes to providing hot water for your home, the type of water heater you choose can significantly impact energy efficiency, utility costs, and overall convenience. With various options available, including standard tank-style, hybrid, and tankless water heaters, it’s essential to weigh the pros and cons of each to determine the best fit for your household. Thats’s why we decided to provide some tips that you should know before choosing the right water heater for your home, and the tank style, hybrid or tankless water heater options available. Whether it might just be time for an upgrade, or your family has grown, and you need more hot water in your home, we can provide you with the best information for you to make the best decision for your home. Let’s explore these three water heater types and help you make an informed decision based on your needs and preferences.

What Type of Water Heater is Best for Your Home: Tank Style, Hybrid, or Tankless

Standard Tank-Style Water Heaters

Tank-style water heaters are generally more affordable upfront. Gas or Electric tank-style water heaters require minimal to sometimes no movement of existing plumbing, to install and replace, making them a convenient choice for many homeowners.  Most residential standard tank style water heaters are now only available in the 50 gallons in size, due to EPA requirements. Though standard tank-style water heaters are more affordable, they are the least energy efficient of the 3 options.

Standard tank-style water heaters typically have a shorter lifespan compared to their tankless or hybrid counterparts, an average of 7-9 years, although they can last longer depending on water quality and maintenance. Tank style water heaters are an expense, meaning the water heater tank will heat up the water and then cycle on and off all day regardless of using it, to maintain the internal temp therefore using energy all day to maintain the tank of hot water.

 Hybrid Water Heaters

Hybrid also known as heat-pump water heaters combine a traditional storage tank with a heat pump, providing the highest energy efficiency of the 3 options. Up to 480% efficiency, making it the lowest in operating cost. Suitable for both residential and commercial use. Hybrid water heaters have various modes to accommodate all hot water demands. Hybrid water heaters are the only residential electric water heater available in larger than 50 gallons. Even though hybrid water heaters often have a higher upfront cost compared to traditional tank-style heaters, its energy efficiency is well worth the investment. Within the first ten years of having an electric hybrid water heater you will save up to and possibly over $4700.

The hybrid water heater recommended by Robins Plumbing comes with a 10-year warranty out of the box. Depending on water quality and with proper care and maintenance, it can last up to 20 years, saving about $10,000 in energy. Hybrid water heaters look like a standard water heater at first glance, but they may require rearranging of water lines. And at the time of this writing the electric hybrid water heaters also qualify for the federal tax credit for energy efficient water heaters. A federal rebate of 30% up to $2,000

 Tankless Water Heater

Tankless heaters create endless hot water on demand, which eliminates the need for a storage tank and standby heat loss. They are energy efficient and compact, and gas tankless water heaters may also qualify for the federal tax rebate for energy efficient water heaters. A federal rebate of 30% up to $600. A tankless water heater is small and compact, it saves valuable space. Generally, tankless water heaters do have higher upfront costs than tank style water heaters. The tankless water heater will have a longer lifespan compared to tank-style heaters. On average, depending on water quality and with proper maintenance, a tankless can last up to 20 years, 2-3 times longer than a standard tank. Without a tank it does not re-heat water constantly to maintain a set temperature, only on demand, there will be energy savings adding up.

Consider What Matters Most To You When Choosing The Right Water Heater For Your Home

Assessing the hot water demands of your household. If you have a large family with high usage, a tankless or hybrid water heater might be more suitable. If energy efficiency and long-term cost savings are top priorities for you, a hybrid or tankless water heater may be the better choice. While tank-style heaters are more budget-friendly initially, hybrid and tankless options offer substantial savings over time. If space saving and endless amounts of hot water is important, a tankless water heater might be the most practical option.

Choosing the right water heater for your home involves considering various factors, from hot water usage patterns to budget constraints and environmental goals. Each type – standard tank-style, hybrid, and tankless – has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. By carefully weighing your priorities and requirements, you can select the water heater that best aligns with the needs of your household, ensuring a reliable and energy-efficient hot water supply for years to come.
