Take A Look At Some Valuable Homeowner Tips to Help You Maintain Your Toilet

Tips From Your Phoenix, AZ Toilet Repair & Plumbing Experts

When it comes to household plumbing, the toilet is one of the most-used—and least-maintained—fixtures in the home. We’ve seen how minor issues can turn into major repairs if your toilet isn’t properly maintained. We speak homeowner and here are some great homeowner tips to maintain your toilet and keep it flushing great for years to come. Our goal is to always educate so that our homeowners feel empowered when it comes to decisions about their plumbing. Whether you’re a new homeowner or just want to avoid unexpected plumbing emergencies, here are six smart homeowner tips on how to maintain your toilet and keep things running smoothly.

Only Flush the Right Things

Toilets are designed to handle two things: human waste and toilet paper. That’s it. Flushing anything else can clog your system and lead to expensive repairs.

Avoid flushing:

  • Baby wipes (even “flushable” ones)
  • Paper towels
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Cotton balls or Q-tips
  • Dental floss
  • Flushable wipes (Yep, I said it)

Phoenix toilet repair tip: Clogs are one of the top calls we get at Robins Plumbing. A little prevention goes a long way!

Test for Hidden Leaks

A running or leaking toilet can waste hundreds of gallons of water per day—a major concern here in the desert climate of Arizona.  This affects your water bill and our community.

Try this quick test:

  • Add a few drops of food coloring to the toilet tank.
  • Wait 20–30 minutes without flushing.
  • If you see color in the bowl, you’ve got a leak.

Maintain the Inner Workings

The fill valve, flapper, and float inside your tank wear down over time—especially in areas with hard water like Phoenix.  Another cause of parts wearing down before their time in your toilet is chemical use.  Avoid putting cleaners and chemicals in your tank to try and keep your toilet clean.  For many manufacturers putting cleaners, even cleaners designed for toilets can void your warranty.

Signs they need replacement:

  • Constant running sounds
  • Weak flushes
  • Needing to “jiggle” the handle to stop the toilet

We recommend having your toilet parts inspected every couple of years—or sooner if you notice issues.

Clean Your Toilet the Right Way

Skip the harsh bleach tablets in the tank—they can damage seals and gaskets. Instead, use gentle, plumbing-safe cleaners.  You will also want to avoid abrasive items like scouring pads and pumice stone.  Abrasive cleaners can remove and dimmish the coating on your porcelain making your toilet more challenging to keep clean in the future and can even reduce the power to flush easily.

Use

  • Baking soda and vinegar
  • Non-abrasive toilet bowl cleaner
  • A toilet-safe brush for weekly cleaning

Inspect the Supply Line

Your toilet’s supply line—usually a flexible metal or plastic hose—can wear out or fail over time. A burst line can flood your bathroom fast.  If the supply line or angle stop aren’t working correctly it can make your toilet fill more slowly.

Signs it’s time to replace it

  • Visible cracks or corrosion
  • Leaking connections
  • It’s more than 5–7 years old

We offer toilet supply line replacement across the Phoenix metro area.

Make Sure It’s Sitting Securely

If your toilet rocks or wobbles, it could mean the bolts are loose or the wax ring is failing—leading to leaks or sewer gas escaping.  A rocking toilet due to a bad wax seal or connection to the plumbing can lead to big floods if the toilet is backed up.  This broken seal would allow toilet water to escape the bowl and allow sewer water to hit your bathroom floor, walls, baseboards and vanities.

If you notice movement
Call a licensed plumber to check the toilet base and flange. Robins Plumbing offers fast, affordable toilet stabilization and flange repair.
