Learn About Some Great Pro DIY Tips To Help You Maintain Your Electric Hybrid Water Heater

Electric hybrid water heaters are a popular and energy-efficient option for homeowners looking to save money on their energy bills. These systems use a combination of electric and heat pump technology to heat water, resulting in lower energy consumption and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. But like any appliance, electric hybrid water heaters require regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly and efficiently. Here are some annual DIY tips from the pros to help you maintain your electric hybrid water heater:

     1. Check the filter screen regularly.

Since hybrid water heaters pull ambient air from their surroundings as an energy source. There is an air filter, similar to your air conditioner that needs regular cleaning because debris build up.  The harder your hybrid has to work the more it costs to run. A dirty filter can dramatically shorten the lifespan of your hybrid water heaters pump.  How often your screen needs to be cleaned will depend on the air quality being used.

You will want to check it every 30-90 days when you first get your hybrid. Checking it constantly will help you gauge how dirty your filter is and how often you need to clean it.  Some clients can get away with cleaning once a year. Other clients, like myself need to clean them much more frequently.  My hybrid is in my garage and so is a large freezer. My dryer vents are not too far from my hybrid so I have a reminder on my phone once a month to clean my filter right along with replacing my A/C filters.

     2. Check the Anode Rod

The anode rod is a long, narrow metal rod that’s inserted into the water heater tank to help prevent corrosion. Over time, the anode rod can become depleted and need to be replaced. To check the anode rod, turn off the power to the water heater and turn off the water supply. Then remove the anode rod from the tank and inspect it for signs of corrosion or wear. If the anode rod is more than 50% depleted, it’s time to replace it with a new one.

Anode rods can be very difficult to remove, even for professionals.  If you cannot get yours removed rather than forcing it call a licensed plumbing professional. A local plumbing technician in your area can check your anode rod so you don’t risk breaking your tank.

     3. Flush the Tank

Over time, sediment and mineral buildup can accumulate in the bottom of the water heater tank, reducing its efficiency and causing damage. To flush the tank, turn off the power to the water heater and turn off the water supply. Then attach a garden hose to the drain valve on the bottom of the tank and drain the water into a nearby drain or bucket. This will help remove any sediment or buildup from the tank and improve its efficiency.  Check out our in depth video on how to flush your tank properly so you don’t risk causing damage to your water heater elements.

     4. Check the Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve

The temperature and pressure relief valve also called a T&P is an important safety feature that ensures the safety of your tank.  If your water heater gets too hot, or builds too much pressure the T&P is designed to release the pressure so the water heater does not explode.  Literally, your water heater can explode and become a rocket if the pressure builds too high and the T&P doesn’t work.  Over time, the pressure relief valve can become stuck or malfunction to check the pressure relief valve, turn off the power to the water heater and turn off the water supply. Then lift the valve’s lever and allow some water to flow out. If the valve doesn’t open or the water doesn’t flow freely, it may need to be replaced.

     5. Inspect the Heat Pump

The heat pump is an integral part of the electric hybrid water heater system and needs to be inspected regularly to ensure it’s working properly. To inspect the heat pump, turn off the power to the water heater and remove the access panel on the side of the unit. Then check the heat pump for signs of wear, damage, or debris buildup. If you notice any problems, it’s best to contact a professional for repairs.

By following these annual maintenance tips, you can help extend the life of your electric hybrid water heater. Proper maintenance will keep your electric hybrid water heater running efficiently for years to come. With lower energy bills and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, you’ll enjoy the benefits of a more eco-friendly and cost-effective home.
