Properly Caring For Your Hose Bibb Can Prevent Issues & Prolong Its’ Lifespan

A hose bibb outside of a home.

An outdoor faucet or spigot is also known as a hose bibb. Generally, hose bibbs are the valve installed outside of your home. This valve allows you to access water from outside your home and for your hose to connect to. Hose bibbs make it convenient for outdoor activities such as watering your garden, washing your car, or filling up a pool….. Plus I’m a child of the 90’s, where we weren’t afraid of a slip and slide and water balloon fights. Like any plumbing fixture, your hose bibb can break if not treated correctly. Here are some tips on how to properly care for your hose bibb and keep it from breaking for years to come. To some, this probably seems like a commonsense list. After 25 years of seeing the same mistakes daily from different clients, I know this blog is meant for most of us.

  • Don’t use your hose bibb as a place to hang your hose and buckets. Hose bibbs are not created to carry any kind of weight. They can snap in the wall under stress of weight such as hoses, and buckets you’re trying to fill. Excess weight will make the water line snap.
  • Don’t use your hose bibb as a place to tie up your dog. Believe it or not this is more common than you think. But trust me, tying your dog to your hose bibb often leads to you not having water and your dog running wild and free.  The water line that connects to the hose bibb cannot withstand weight or pressure. A decent pull from a dog can easily snap the water line.
  • Don’t leave your hose connected to your hose bibb. Your hose can seize to your hose bibb. Once your hose seizes to your hose bibb it makes it impossible to remove.  There are certain types of metal on hoses that attach to hose bibbs permanently. Also, hard water can seize your hose to your hose bibb. If you find yourself in a situation where normal effort to remove your hose isn’t working be cautious getting those tools out. You’re more likely to twist the pipe in the wall than to remove a seized hose.
  • Inspect for leaks. One of the most common issues with hose bibbs is leaks. Leaks can occur due to a variety of reasons, such as wear and tear, rust, or a faulty washer. Inspect your hose bibb regularly for leaks, and if you notice any, address them immediately. Ignoring leaks can lead to more significant problems down the line, such as water damage to your home and bug infestations.
  • Make sure your hose bibb is up to code with a vacuum breaker. This is an important safety feature for your home as well as for the water our community uses.  At the end of your hose bibb, there’s a small piece called a vacuum breaker. This piece specifically prevents anything from siphoning through your garden hose and into the water system. Backflow prevention with vacuum breakers is a code requirement and is more than a luxury, it’s a necessity.

Maintaining your hose bibb is essential to prevent malfunctions and prolong its lifespan. By following these few simple tips, you can keep your hose bibb in good working condition. This will help you avoid costly repairs for your hose bibb in the future. Remember, if hose is seizes to your hose bibb it’s time to call a professional!
