Learn About Dual Element Water Heaters and What Are Its’ Pros and Cons

What are dual element water heaters and what the pros and cons of having one? It hurts me to write this blog, but it’s come to my attention that there are people out there (home warranty plumbers and handymen) pushing single element water heaters vs a dual element water heater.  Let me be clear, this is more than often a scam. Single element water heaters should, in my not-so-humble professional opinion, only be installed in rare circumstances and not anything larger than 30 gallons.

As technology continues to evolve, so do the options available for heating water in our homes. Among the innovative choices, the dual-element water heater. Dawn of the new and modern age. The dual element water heater has gained popularity for its enhanced capabilities and efficient performance. But just like any appliance or plumbing component it has advantages, and disadvantages. Just kidding – wait till you see my disadvantage list. Let’s weigh in on exactly what a dual element water heaters are and its’ pros and cons.

What is a Dual-Element Water Heater

A dual-element water heater, as the name suggests, features two heating elements within the tank. These elements are typically located at the top and bottom of the tank. Each element has its own thermostat for temperature control. Unlike traditional single-element heaters, dual-element water heaters allow for more precise temperature regulation. Dual element water heaters also allow for faster heating times.

How Does It Work

To start the heating process the top element turns on first. This provides a more instant demand for hot water when the demand is called for. Once the water in the top half of the tank reaches the set temperature, the top element turns off, and the bottom element turns on to heat the rest of the water that is being stored in the tank. Because of the two elements in dual element water heaters, dual element water heaters tend to be more energy efficient than single element water heaters. They use less electricity and warm water more quickly and with a lot more consistency.

Advantages of Dual-Element Water Heaters

Efficient Heating:

  • One of the standout advantages of a dual-element water heater is its efficiency in heating water. With two heating elements working in conjunction, the time required to reach the desired temperature is significantly reduced. It also provides hot water much faster and longer.

Energy Efficiency:

  • Dual-element water heaters are designed with energy efficiency in mind. The dual elements allow for more controlled heating cycles. They also prevent unnecessary energy consumption, resulting in potential cost savings on utility bills.

Versatility in Temperature Settings:

  • These water heaters offer versatility in temperature settings. The dual-element configuration allows users to set different temperatures for the upper and lower parts of the tank. This feature is especially useful for prolonging the time in which you have consistent hot water or increasing the hot water recovery rate of the water heater.

Consistent Hot Water Supply:

  • The dual-element design helps prolong a continuous and consistent supply of hot water, even during periods of high demand. This reliability makes dual-element water heaters suitable for households with varying hot water needs.  If you’re running out of hot water it is likely that your water heater needs to be repaired, maintenance or is undersized for the usage in your home.

Extended Lifespan:

  • Distributing the heating workload between two elements can potentially extend the lifespan of the water heater. By minimizing wear on individual components, dual-element heaters may offer increased durability and longevity.

 Disadvantages of Dual-Element Water Heaters

Higher Initial Cost:

  • A dual-element water heater has higher upfront costs, which is a notable drawback. While the long-term energy savings may offset this expense, it’s essential to consider the initial investment when budgeting for a new water heater.  Seriously, it’s not that much more = don’t buy a single element water heater based on the couple of dollar investment to upgrade and if someone is trying to tell you it’s substantially more you should escort them off your property.

Potential for Element Failures:

  • “With more components, there is an increased potential for element failures. If one of the heating elements malfunctions, it can impact the overall performance of the water heater and can require a replacement.”  In fairness this is what AI came up with and I laughed.  A single element water heater is more likely to have element failure than a dual element water heater from sheer workload.  The thing that will destroy your elements and cause them to fail is poor water quality hands down. Also if one of the elements fails it WILL effect the performance and WILL require a replacement part.

Space Requirements:

  • “Dual-element water heaters may demand more space due to their larger tank size. Often if a single element water heater is required it is simply due to lack of space available for the water heater.  Under cabinets, in ceilings, tight spaces this is truly the only time I talk to a client about the option of a single element water heater and often the best option is to go tankless rather than a single element water heater.”  Just kidding! That was also an AI statement. Dual element water heaters are usually the same size as single element water heaters, usually the only thing that will change the size of the water heater is gallon capacity, so this is not a pro or a con in most situations.

In the realm of water heater options, the dual-element model is the choice. Dual element water heaters are great for efficiency and consistent hot water supply. While the upfront cost may be a factor to weigh in, but not really, the advantages of faster heating times, energy efficiency, and extended lifespan make the dual-element water heater the better option for homeowners. As you explore your options, consider your household’s specific needs and preferences to determine whether the dual-element water heater is the best option for your household.
